OTTAWA FOOD BANK

Dave and Centretown Emergency Food

Dave was a successful contractor with a new wife and child but started making some bad choices, alcohol was one of them. Within three years Dave became a severe alcoholic, his wife left with their child, his business started to go downhill and he was facing bankruptcy. His wife got a restraining order and he could not see his child, a blessing at the time as he was drinking heavily and was not a responsible adult or a positive role model. Dave has been sober for 9 months now and is receiving supervised visits with his son, one of the stipulations is that there has to be food in the home for that child to eat. John comes here the day before a visit with his child to get fresh fruit, bread, peanut butter and juice. He has explained to me that he only comes for food when his child is visiting, he receives 565$ per month on social assistance and his rent for a room is 500$, he is trying to find work but still has challenges. He would starve he says but his child means everything to him and he swallows his pride so that he can have his visit with his son. He thanks the volunteers for their kindness and always tells us that he will pay us back, we tell him not to bother just concentrate on getting better and reconnecting with his son.
