From client to volunteer
Lowertown Good Neighbours Community House
Joanne has been volunteering at the Ottawa Food Bank for four Years. Initially Joanne was a client, however after observing the positive atmosphere and opportunity for socializing with a diverse group, Joanne decided to become a volunteer.
Throughout her experience, Joanne has become more aware of the circumstances in which her community is living. She researches and informs clients of ways to improve their diets on a budget and has been able to challenge herself. She had been very isolated and through volunteering, she has a new found sense of confidence
After deciding to return to school, Joanne continued to volunteer at the food bank as much as she could. The food bank provided a safety net and helped Joanne get through each semester when expenses and tuition made budgeting difficult.
Joanne graduated from her program and continues to volunteer.
