Young couple who are new to Canada

Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard

Jasmine and Jacob were a young couple that immigrated to Canada for a better life for their two small children and themselves.  He left a job as an engineer and she had completed a Master’s degree in Business Administration.  Though they spoke English, they needed to take classes to improve their command of the language.  Their education was not recognized in Canada so they began taking training in second careers to get jobs.  Living on the savings that they came to Canada with, was difficult, especially with one small child still in diapers.  The GEFC (Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard) provided a way for this young couple to stretch their resources to provide for the family.

Jasmine also began to volunteer on a weekly basis and found a warm and accepting environment that became a part of her extended family, replacing the family ties that she had so far away in her home country.  The extra help, support and friendship that this brought to her life has been vital to her well-being and the challenges of adjusting to a new country and home.
