A Light Through Crisis

“Our community faces many challenges. But, together, we are thousands strong. Thanks to volunteers like you, a food secure Ottawa is possible. You are our ‘light’ through this crisis.” – Rachael Wilson, CEO, Ottawa Food Bank

National Volunteer Week is happening from April 27 to May 3. This is a time to recognize, appreciate, and celebrate the invaluable contributions of volunteers across Canada who have generously gifted their skills and time to causes dear to them. At the Ottawa Food Bank, volunteers are integral to our work, which is why we are pleased to launch the 2025 edition of our Volunteer Impact Report.

A historic year of food bank visits was matched with a historic volunteer effort.

As Ottawa’s food insecurity crisis remained prevalent, our volunteers rose to the challenge to provide overwhelming support, from food sorting and farming to administrative work and home delivery.

In total, 20,125 hours of volunteer time was contributed to the Ottawa Food Bank by 2,640 volunteers.

This is equivalent to 12 full-time staff members, allowing us to increase our organizational capacity by approximately 15%.

Our 2025 Volunteer Impact Report details the contributions of our volunteers and how they supported providing food to the 1 in 4 households that experience food insecurity across the city. Whether it is a smile at the Ottawa Food Bank front desk or a friendly delivery of food hampers, volunteers have not just made an impact with hours and skills, but with their compassion, dedication, and kindness.

We wish all Ottawa Food Bank volunteers a Happy National Volunteer Week! Thank you for your compassion and dedication to food security for all across our city.
