Shannon joined the Ottawa Food Bank as a volunteer to gain experience in an administrative role while contributing to her community. She started in September 2024 and enjoyed engaging directly with clients and donors, and seeing the positive impact the Ottawa Food Bank network of nearly 100 agencies and programs makes in the community.
“I help support the Ottawa Food Bank staff, volunteers, donors and clients through my work with the Admin Support team. I process monetary donations through use of the QuickBooks software, monitor the general email address and respond appropriately and welcome donors, delivery people and clients when they enter our office. Each volunteer shift is different, and I am gaining the administrative experience I was looking for. What really makes me feel good after each volunteer shift is knowing that I am part of the Ottawa Food Bank team helping those in our community who really need support.”
At the Ottawa Food Bank, our volunteer community has grown to over 2600 people over the past 40 years. Our Team 2600 includes individual volunteers, corporate and community group volunteers and summer student volunteers. They sort food in the warehouse, deliver hampers to individuals who are unable to access food banks, support food drives and special events held throughout the year, work at our Community Harvest Farm in Stittsville, as well as help in our office. We thank them all for their time, energy and skills and for being part of our indispensable volunteer team.

Kevin has joined Ottawa Food Bank’s volunteers, in semi-retirement, as a seasoned Public Relations and Communications professional. He sought a flexible volunteer role with the Ottawa Food Bank and was excited to take on the role of capturing volunteer stories to have as assets to share and celebrate volunteering, effectively enhancing the Ottawa Food Bank’s capacity for recognition.
Beyond this effort, Kevin has also become an active and engaged Special Events volunteer who has been a great personality and presence at events in the community.
